This recognition celebrates builders’ merchants that have been serving the construction and building materials industry for more than 50 years, highlighting businesses that have demonstrated resilience, commitment, and longevity within the sector. Chandler Material Supplies was listed amongst some of the most established and respected names in merchanting, with our history dating back to 1952.

Being acknowledged by Builders’ Merchant News (BMN) and the Builders Merchant Federation (BMF) is a real honour for everyone connected with Chandler Materials. As a long-standing independent, family-run builders’ merchant, we have always taken pride in offering knowledgeable service, reliable supply, and strong relationships with both trade professionals and local customers across Essex.

From our beginnings in Chelmsford over seven decades ago, Chandler Materials has continued to evolve alongside the construction industry while remaining true to the values the business was built upon. Over the years, we have expanded our offering far beyond traditional building materials, now supplying a wide range of products and specialist departments including plumbing, landscaping, timber, decorating supplies, insulation, civils, roofing, and bathroom design.

We have also continued to grow across the county, with the acquisition and expansion of Essex Timber & Plywood in Southend helping us strengthen our presence across Essex and support even more customers with quality products and dependable service.

The BMN Top 100 initiative was launched to celebrate companies with over 50 years of trading history and forms part of BMN’s own 50th anniversary celebrations. The programme recognises businesses that have made a lasting contribution to the merchanting and building materials industry through commitment, service, and continued investment in the sector.

Recognition such as this continues to reflect the strength and dedication of the team behind Chandler Materials. Over the years, the business has also celebrated individual achievements within the industry, including Lauren being recognised at the BMF Young Merchant Achiever Awards in 2023.

 Accolades such as these highlight the passion, knowledge, and commitment that continue to drive the company forward across every department. In addition, Ben our Finance Director has also won The Top 100 Merchant Influencer Award presented by the BMF.

At Chandler Materials, we’re always proud to support projects that bring real value to our local community. So, when members of Beaulieu Community Centre reached out to us for help with their refurbishment, we were more than happy to provide the materials needed to give the centre a well-deserved refresh.

We’ve donated a range of decorating essentials – from rollers, brushes, and tray sets to masking tape and other supplies – to help transform the centre and bring it back to life. It’s a small way we can contribute, but one we hope will make a big difference in ensuring the space looks welcoming and fresh for everyone who uses it.

Beaulieu Community Centre plays such an important role in the area. It’s more than just a building – it’s a place where people come together. From hosting family events and children’s activities to providing a space for classes, groups, and social gatherings, the centre is at the heart of local life. For many, it’s a hub of connection, support, and opportunity. That’s why this project matters so much, and why we wanted to play our part.

We love being involved in community initiatives like this, and we’re really excited to see the transformation take shape. Chandler Materials is proud to have supported CHESS Homeless in their incredible Turning Point project — a life-changing initiative designed to provide long-term accommodation and support for those experiencing homelessness in Essex.

As part of our ongoing commitment to community-based initiatives, Chandler Materials donated £20,000 worth of building materials to help bring this project to life. This contribution was part of the wider effort to develop 24 high-quality modular homes in the village of Stock — creating not just places to live, but spaces where individuals can rebuild their lives with dignity and security.

The Turning Point project goes beyond temporary shelter. With access to wraparound support, including mental health services, job training, and personal development opportunities, residents are given the tools they need to take positive steps forward and break the cycle of homelessness for good.

We are absolutely delighted with the end result. The site is now fully completed, with all 24 units finished and ready to support the individuals who will call them home. It’s been inspiring to see this project evolve from early planning to a fully operational facility — and we’re proud to have played a part in its journey.

The project was officially opened recently by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, who cut the ribbon in a celebratory ceremony attended by VIPs, donors, and key supporters. Guests were invited to tour the site and view the completed accommodation for the very first time — a powerful moment that underscored the impact this project will have on the lives of its future residents.
